Finally went to the doctor today after the nurse made me an appointment. She was surprisingly nice (I am still mindful of that episode two years ago when another doctor there tried to charge me £35 for giving me a yellow fever jab which I didnt need / didn't want / didnt have. Prescribed me antibiotics. Went round to the coop, bought some nice fresh fruit, went to the chemist and got my drugs. Came back to my room and found an email from a Samaritan who says he's found my wallet on Walton St!!!!!!! God, what is going on with me! He says that everything is still in there, he'll deliver it back to me via St Annes' lodge at lunchtime. This shows that there are two kinds of people in the world, the good people and the stupid people.

My body just wont decide what temperature it wants to stay at. It was 38 this morning when the nurse measured me, but now feels so much hotter again. Sometimes I feel so much better, but its so short and then I have to cover myself with two duvets and a blanket, drench myself in sweat, drug myself up and sleep the day away. As a result I get that having slept too much sick feeling as well. My joints ache like an old woman. My throat is burning and hurts EVERY time I swallow. If I start to talk I'll start coughing, if I start coughing I'll start retching, and that is just not good. The nurse is a kind soul but does not help in the slighest. Her comments include "this bug is said to depress you and makes you down", just my luck, why didnt I get the bug that makes me happy? I havent been been able to do anything since Monday and I certainly havent worked since Friday. I am not even in the mood to knit. My tonsils are swollen and at this rate I might develop tonsillitis. And now on the 4th day of my illness I am getting a blocked nose. What else is instore for me, I wonder. Well I guess I will have lost some weight through no eating these coupla days. I am a forced anoxeric, is that a good thing?

You know you're Asian when...

I got forward this by a random person, and although Asian here refers to Indian/pakistani rather than Oriental/Malaysian, its still quite true!

The underlined ones are those which apply to me!

* When you tell your parents you got 98%, and they ask you what happened to the other 2%
* There is a sale on any item, you buy 100 of them.
*You make tea in a saucepan.
* You never buy bin bags, but use your saved grocery bags for it.
* You put your clothes in suitcases instead of wardrobes.
*You have a 'Singer Brother' sewing machine at home.
* Your mother has a minor disagreement with her sister and doesn't talk to her for ten years.
* You call an older person you've never met before "uncle".
* You hide everything from your parents.
* Your mother does everything for you if you are male.
* You do all the housework and cooking if you are female.
* Your relatives alone could populate a small city.
* Everyone is a family friend.
* Everyone always called you for help on homework.
* You study law, medicine or engineering at university.
* You were thick so you studied computer science or business instead.
* You know no one who has studied music.
* You went to a university as far away from home as possible.
* You still came back home to live with your parents after you had finished.
* Your best friend got married at the age of 18.
* You like the meat well done.
* You eat onions with everything.
* You use chilli sauce instead of tomato ketchup.
* You fight over who pays the dinner bill.
* You say you hate Indian films/songs but secretly watch/hear them
* You avoid public places when with a member of the opposite sex, especially if there is
an acquaintance within a 250 miles radius.
* You always say "open the light" instead of "turn the light on".
* You secure your baggage with a rope.
* You're walking out of customs with your trolley at the airport and you see all twenty-five
members of your family who have come to pick you up.
* You get very upset when airlines refuse to accept your luggage which is just 80 lbs overweight.
* You go back to your parents' country and people treat you like a member of the royal family.
* You ask your dad a simple question and he tells you story of how he had to walk miles
barefoot just to get to school.
* Your Dad drives a Nissan.
* You're rich so he drives a Mercedes.
* You are ALWAYS taking off and putting on your shoes wherever you go
* When you were little you always wondered why your English friends waited until after breakfast
to brush their teeth when you did it first thing in the morning.

* To your English friends, oil is used purely for cooking and not as a grooming aid
* Your parents have nicknames but only because people they work with just stop when trying to
 read their names
* You have annoying nicknames like Chotu or Chicku
* Your parents call all your friends "Beta" (son/daughter)
* Your mother measures wealth in gold and diamonds
* Your parents drink 3 cups of tea a day
* Your parents compare you to all of their friends' kids.
* At least once a week your mom says, "I want to go to Malaysia"
* No one ever seems to call ahead of time to say they are coming over for a visit.
* Your parents worry what other people will think if you're not going to be a doctor/ engineer.
* You're parent's always say while shopping abroad, "It's cheaper in Malaysia"

So, if you ever had any doubts, it's official, I'm Asian.

I heard on the radio yesterday that Orange has now launched a kettle fitted with a radio and some sort of phone receiver thing. To make a cup of tea, all you have to do is send a text to the kettle and it will boil itself. Apparently another phone company had been thinking the same thing all along - T-Mobile.

An islander at heart

The first thing I did, after an agonising 24 hour epic journey home from malaysia via beijing, was to make myself a cup of tea and put my feet up. Since then I have taken numerous showers, unpacked, seen James in Starbucks, talked to Charl on the phone and tried to organise my little get together tomorrow. My failure to obtain a diary for this year has meant that I am possibly doomed to a chaotic year. I want to revise but I cant. I want to feel hot again but its cold. I dont know what i want to say here, so i think i'll stop.

5 days till i get home

Since the little finger-jamming incident, my finger's gotten better, but found that my eyes have gotten worse, thanks to all the late night essaying and long reading lists no doubt. the optician tells me that they'll only get worse too in my final year. I guess I need to eat more fish?

My birthday is coming up soon, and my chinese birthday is on the 18th. I had plans to hold some sort of celebration on the weekend of 17/18th, but i havent been able to find a suitable venue. So it might just be a cosy meal in a restaurant in London sometime over that weekend. It would be nice to see people, especially since I've been out of the country for 3 months, but no worries if you cant make it for whatever reason. I've learnt not to expect too much. But if you can, please tell me and I'll confirm details next week. If you're feeling particularly generous/rich too, and decide to give me a present, I've got my very near-sighted eye on a digital camera. Obviously I wont ask you to get me the camera, but I'd appeciate a small contribution towards it in the form of an amazon.co.uk gift certificate. Thanks. If not, your declaration of our undying friendship will always do, as ever.

My sister has already gone to Taiwan, my parents and brothers are visiting my stepmother's parents for the weekend, and i'm left here to pack and get ready for going to Taiwan tomorrow.

I've been in Malaysia for just over a month now, and I've managed never to stay in my house in Kajang for more than 3 nights in a row. After the last update, I saw my sister off to Taiwan, spent the weekend at my grandparents, came back home for one night, before spending 3 days at my auntie's. My cousin Kiwi took me to more restaurants, and we watched Bewitched in the cinema. Rather disappointed actually, I'd expected a better plot, and I want to watch the old Bewitched series again. I still remember catching the beginning of the episodes in the morning before going to school. If only all my wishes could come true too at the twitch of a nose! It's also rather cool having a car. You can go anywhere in the middle of the night for the smallest things, like buying a dvd to watch for the night. I want to be able to drive a car too, but I really dont trust myself behind wheels.

meh, there's not much going on. hopefully Taiwan will be as good as I'm expecting.
